David Weber directed me to THIS… article. Very telling of their own style.

Great article!  Harold Gomberg’s recording of the Mozart Quartet for Oboe/Strings remains one of my all time favorites.  When I was growing up, that was my reference sound.  He played on huge, apparently very hard reeds (more so than Ralph, who I read somewhere considered it unhealthy).  If you listen to Eugene Izotov’s amazing stylistic artistry on the Sound in Motion CD, you can hear the Tabuteau/Ralph Gomberg tradition lives on.

Interesting article!  I can’t believe I had never seen it before.  I find it curious that the Gomberg brothers thought (allegedly) that they sounded alike - I always found Harold’s tone twice the size, twice as rich, and twice as pleasing(IMHO).  I had the pleasure to hear & meet both men.  both were quite cordial to a young fan.
