The historic reed continued.

I played the first two moments of the Bach G minor partita memorized last night on a recital. The good news was I had no memory slips, and played it pretty smoothly. The downside was that I practiced pretty hard that morning and afternoon and thought I had given myself enough time in between, but I didn’t. My mouth got pretty tired, and I missed some low note attacks. Bummer. but the historic reed held up well, and played beautifully with great tone and response. It also had a great range of dynamic range.
I’ll play Ich Habe Genug twice next week, once in the morning service and once in the afternoon service. I’m looking forward to using the special reed to see how things go.
I have a new order for reeds from a man in Georgia! The problem is, all of my individual reed cases (the plastic clear ones) are in a box, on a boat, on the way to the states. So I need to figure out a safe way to ship them without getting damaged.

Yes, it’s the A minor flute partita transposed. Yeah, i felt I needed to run through some parts to make sure they were secure in my mind. Guess I just overdid it!

that’s very good to do by memory! i’ve never tried such a thing but i would assume bach is pretty hard in that motifs are constanty repeated and varied…it could get pretty confusing! Btw, I’ve discovered that mining my daughter’s Suzuki violin books is a pretty good way to find new oboe stuff…there’s a Veracini Gigue in book 5 that’s really fun to play..some of the music goes out of range and requires minor adjustment. I started working on the Loeffler trio yesterday - I like that funky romantic music.

Never thought of the Loeffler as a “funky romantic” piece. I played it my senior year of high school. I love that piece, and think it’s one of the most colorful oboe chamber music pieces around. Just make sure find a great violist and an even better pianist!

..“romantic” because it’s in the romantic style (thinking of rachmaninoff for example) and funky because “romantic” music tends to be very impressionistic and programmatic (it always reminds me of Monet paintings - water lilies for example - or Proust’s A La Recherche du Temps Perdu). In this case it’s inspired by two very romantic poems that are pretty funky in their own right. We played Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto in one of my orchestras recently - have you played that? - it’s got all kinds of funky oboe flourishes that you can barely hear on recordings - it’s a romantic fog of feeling! I like the Loeffler too, but when I read the Amazon editorial review of the Vogel version,I perked up when it was described as “24 minutes of wishy-washy pseudo-impressionism that goes in one ear and right out the other”. Wonder how he really feels?!

Is that the A minor flute partita transposed or the violin partita you mentioned a few posts back? Practicing the day of a concert or even rehearsal can really mess up the chops, i totally agree. But sometimes you have to!
