Very annoyed.

Sunday April 13 2008

In college, scheduling rehearsals is very difficult.

Very, very difficult.

Things come up. Like other rehearsals, or assignments, or announced mandatory recitals or tests or whatever.

And for the 2nd time in a week, I’ve had a situation like this.

Person trying to schedule a rehearsal: “Okay, so what’s all your schedules like during the week of BLAH… BLAH…?”

My response: “I’m free during then.”

Three days later, sometimes as much as a month

Person trying to schedule a rehearsal writes back. “Okay, so we’re on for a rehearsal on BLAH… BLAH….”

Me: “Um, I’ve already scheduled other things during the time it’s taken you to get back.”

And me being the wuss that I am, end up changing my original plans. Why can’t people either promptly respond, or bounce another email back asking about specific dates?

Hate to break this, but scheduling doesn’t get better after college! Some people (few and far between) actually get back to you - but mostly it is a nightmare of trying to write everything down. Gets really ticklish if you have to balance gigs of $$$ with less well paying things, and then if you have kids of course their things sometimes need to take precidence. I’m a wuss too, I usually bend over backwards trying to accomodate all the people who didn’t get back to me!
Good luck with that…

I try to remember to say, “‘I’m currently available on XX but if I don’t hear back by YY I will have to open up that date and time.” Deadlines. They help.

It never does go perfectly smoothly, though. And yes, it continues to be an issue at times. Still, with tenured jobs with those handy dandy contracts they have to let us know by a certain date and that’s that. Any changes after that date mean we can opt out without being penalized.

As for recitals and chamber music ... well, I just had to deal with both this year and rehearsal scheduling was extremely difficult, but we finally managed. It did mean compromise for some of us.

And so it goes ....
